Hey Advocates,
I am planning a winter break ski trip to Colorado with my 2 teen boys. We are all expert skiers and want something a little out of the ordinary Breckenridge/Griswold Family vacation.
Any recommendations?
Javier,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you - I have been on vacation in New Zealand.
In response to your question, if you are all expert skiers then you have a world of options. To add a little something out of the ordinary I would suggest that you book a snow cat day at Monarch Mountain or get a day in at Silverton mountain with a guide.
Monarch is about 2.5 hours from Denver Airport and 1.5 hours from most of the I-70 resorts (Keystone, Breck, Copper, Vail) So if you stay at or ski these more popular resorts you could drive to Monarch one day for a snowcat tour. Monarch is a small local mountain without the bells and whistles of the big resorts. The mountain and terrain is pretty small but they run snowcat tours in the backcountry for some fresh powder and steep terrain. check out the Monarch website for info: http://www.skimonarch.com/snowcat_tours.asp
Another option is to spend a day down in Silverton Mountain in southern Colorado in the San Juan Mountains. This is a long drive from Denver (5-6 hours) but if you seek expert only backcountry conditions then it may be worth your while. Silverton is an expert / backcountry terrain only mountain where you ski with a guide. Check it out at: http://www.silvertonmountain.com
If these options are too far or too expensive then hire a guide/instructor at one of the resorts for an afternoon to show you some of the hidden stashes at that resort. I have always told people that all resorts in Colorado are great skiing if you know where to ski.
Enjoy your vacation and hope you get lots of pow.
